Competition // Upcycle Challenge

Competition // Upcycle Challenge

Sustainable Business Hub, SYSAV Utveckling and VA SYD wish to demonstrate the possibilities to extract value from materials from recycling centers and invite students to participate in an upcycling challenge.

WHY?
To achieve a circular economy more of the bulky household waste needs to be reused and upcycled. In recent field studies it has been estimated that as much as 20 % of the total collected municipal bulky waste could be reused, at least on a functional level.

SYSAV and VA SYD, two municipality-owned waste management companies, and Sustainable Business Hub, a cluster for cleantech companies, wish, with this open call, to demonstrate the potential value of the bulky household waste for reuse and to raise awareness and interest of this issue among th public.

WHO IS INVITED?
Students, 18 years old or older, who have an interest in design. The competition will be conducted in teams of 2-3 people. It is possible to apply as a team or individually. Individuals will be organized into teams on the introduction day.

TASK AND CHALLENGE
The organizers of the competition will arrange a joint visit to a recycling center in Malmö where all the participants can choose from various materials (bulky household waste preliminarily sorted for the competition) for the construction of the ‘’product/item’’ which they wish to submit to the competition.

The ‘’product’’ must fulfill the requirement of functionality, i.e. items of merely decorative purpose do not comply with the competition rules.

The challenge requires that the ‘’product’’ should be made only from materials chosen from the recycling center, with the exceptions for necessary supplementary materials such as nails and screws, paints, glues and textiles.)

One of the evaluation criteria is that the ‘’product’’ should be considered to have commercial potential.
