Industrial hemp is one of the most interesting plants providing strong fibers for textile, building materials, composites e.g., besides high value products from the hemp top. Recently new breakthroughs have come with utilization of hemp fibers in new business models, such as insulation materials from EKOLUTION in Sweden and launching of the hemp chair by Normann Copenhagen, processed in Denmark. For many small and medium sized companies, the cost of engaging and participating in innovation procurement can be high, and thus participation can feel risky. But for the companies that take the chance, there is great potential to get a first contract for their innovative solutions. However, an important factor for this to happen is that there are procuring authorities who understand that they can use their own demand as a driving force for innovation. But even so, how do you get involved as a company and how can you afford to develop products when the need of the buyer is not decided? In this webinar, Ms Carolin Maule from Compare present how an innovation procurement can be designed in a way that optimizes the benefit for both the procuring authority as well as the participating companies by using remuneration of the participating companies as an incentive. In this way, not only the winning company is a winner, but all companies involved also get the chance to develop products for an existing need, while at the same time, receiving some remuneration. Det gör vi genom att sammanföra deras upphandlande enheter med företag. INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION Sustainable Business Hub has always been active in international collaborations, partnering with organizations across the globe to accelerate green innovations. We regularly host international delegations in Sweden, showcasing the best solutions in sustainable development. Through our involvement with the International Cleantech Network (ICN), we maintain a close working relationship with cleantech clusters worldwide, further expanding our reach and impact. We are happy to develop new collaborations on international projects. OUR INNOVATION AREAS We specialize in three key areas that are critical to the green transition: sustainable energy, climate adaptation, and circular resource management. Through our leadership and participation in international projects, we work closely with municipalities, companies, and academic partners to drive progress in these fields. 1. Sustainable Energy Our expertise in sustainable energy is extensive, supported by a wide network of members actively involved in this sector. Over the years, we’ve led various projects, including initiatives focused on low-temperature district heating and innovative energy systems in the Öresund region. Currently, we are engaged in cutting-edge projects that explore renewable energy storage, digital energy planning, energy flexibility, and solar power solutions. A notable example is our work in Malmö’s Northern Harbour, where we are developing sustainable energy system solutions. 2. Climate Adaptation We are committed to advancing climate adaptation strategies that promote blue-green, or nature-based, solutions in urban areas. Through the ARCADIA project, we are creating a regional partnership aimed at enhancing resilience against climate change by leveraging blue-green infrastructure. One of our standout initiatives is the Blue Green City Lab, a nationally recognized platform for the promotion and development of nature-based solutions. Over the years, it has led to the creation of several blue-green demonstration sites in Malmö, showcasing the practical benefits of such solutions in real-world environments. 3. Circular Resources Our expertise in circular resources is particularly strong in the areas of biogas and biochar. Together with our members, we are exploring innovative ways to transform municipal biomass waste into high-value products like building materials, biogas, and biochar. We are also focused on textile and plastic recycling, working through collaborations like a Danish-Swedish initiative where municipalities and the waste industry join forces with entrepreneurs to develop new products from recycled textiles. Furthermore, we investigate how public procurement can be leveraged as a tool to increase circularity and achieve environmental goals. 4. Blue economy Blue economy, or marine economy, is an area that is becoming increasingly important in the global economy. The OECD ranks it as the world's eighth largest economy in terms of value. We have been working for a long time on various initiatives related to the sea and coastlines in the innovation areas of climate adaptation, circular resources and sustainable energy. To highlight this work, we have chosen to make the blue economy a separate area of innovation. We are currently running projects that involve collecting and recycling plastic from the oceans, as well as collecting and using seaweed and algae. The aim is to find solutions that create opportunities for businesses, strengthen economic growth and at the same time are positive for the marine environment.
